Managing Irrigation Schemes and Adaptation to Water Scarcity in African Agriculture
In line of the interest in capacity development in the field of water resources and irrigation management, Mr. Eng. Tarek El-Sayed, Head of the Regional Training Center for Water Resources and Irrigation, inaugurated today the activities of the regional training program (Managing Irrigation Schemes and Adaptation to Water Scarcity in African Agriculture).
The inauguration was attended by the Minister Plenipotentiary, Ms. Shereen Imam from the Arab Fund for Technical Assistance to African Countries in the League of Arab States, and Prof. Dr. Mori Agbonallahor from the Food Safety Authority of the African Union.
The program will run from June 11 to June 21, 2023, with the participation of 15 trainees from 14 African countries: Botswana - Burundi - Cameroon - Eritrea - Kenya - Lesotho - Liberia - Malawi - Nigeria - Rwanda - South Africa - South Sudan - Gambia - Zimbabwe.
The training is conducted by a group of distinguished technical expertise from Cairo University, the Water Research Center, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, the Agricultural Research Center and the Ministry of Environment.
The program deals with topics on integrated water management in Egypt,
Field irrigation systems, Egyptian law for water resources management, water user associations.
Groundwater management, design and operation of pumps, adaptation to climatic changes in agriculture, water quality management,
Modern irrigation systems design and GIS.
The program includes several field visits to the projects of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation in Fayoum, the research center station in Wadi El-Natrun, in addition to the information and forecasting center in the ministry's building in the Administrative Capital. It is worth noting that the program is funded by the Arab Fund for Technical Aid for African Countries affiliated to the League of Arab States, and the Food Safety Authority of the African Union.
